When designer Karl Lagerfeld sent models out onto the Spring 2014 Chanel couture runway, styled in luxe python sneakers (bedazzled with bits of pearl, lace and tweed), it was a sign that the fashion sneaker had ascended to a new style status: Formerly relegated to the wardrobes of hipsters, athletes and rappers, the fashion-forward sneaker was a hop, a skip and a jump away from entering the mainstream. (I’m not talking about normal, everyday training shoes, which have obviously been a mainstream footwear staple for decades.)
And indeed: Just a couple months later, sneakers on the runway was a major trend at the Fall 2014 NYFW shows.
“If you look at what Ralph [Lauren] did on the runway,” said fashion journalist Laurie Brookins, “one of his most beautiful looks was Karlie Kloss, when she wore that all-white, Marlene Dietrich kind of look. You look at the shoes: They were sneakers.”
