Just before his runway show opened the first full day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA), Aurelio Costarella explained that even in his 14th year he was “a little bit nervous as you can expect…does it get any easier? The answer is no.” While Costarella may still feel the pressure of designing, his Spring 2014 collection titled ‘Solaire’ certainly looked effortless. Models with Rainbow-Brite-goes-glam hair and Swarovski-encrusted faces showcased a collection inspired by the work of American modernist painter and fashion photographer Man Ray and his various muses. This resulted in beaded showgirl fringing, a tutti-frutti colour palette for spliced silk panelling, plunging sweetheart necklines and subtle incarnations of Costarella’s signature corsetry. “I wanted it to be a bit of a potpourri” explained the designer.
