Jonathan Simkhai has officially graduated from newbie designer to chic darling of the fashion world. He can thank his first official fashion show for that. The collection, a range of intricate knits, sheers and dresses all artfully layered, was exactly what the moment needs. You know, the moment that has things like health goths and athleisure wear. Jonathan Simkhai is your new go-to guy.
We spoke with the designer via email about his first official runway show, his patterns and more.
theFashionSpot: What was your inspiration for the collection?
Jonathan Simkhai: This season I was really inspired by the adrenaline and fast paced reality of my first runway show. Also, by the world of car racing and race tracks. This evolved into the different motifs of oil slicks and tire tracks in the collection. Both of these capture the idea of being fearless and really pushing myself.
tFS: The sheer and intricate patterns were beautiful. Can you tell us a bit about those?
JS: This season I really pushed the envelope in terms of fabric innovation and explored techniques and fabrication that I hadn’t used before. I tried to balance sporty and sexy by marrying really delicate lace elements with tougher details such as wire.

tFS: I hate to do this to you, but what’s your favorite piece in the collection? You must choose!
JS: It’s impossible to choose my favorite but I did incorporate eveningwear for the first time this season so the last looks to go down the runway were a highlight.
tFS: What are you off to now that your show is done?
JS: Celebrate with friends and dive into developing the next collection.
