Lane Bryant is on a roll. As part of its winning game plan to attract a younger, more fashion-forward audience with high-profile designer collaborations, the $1 billion retail giant tapped design darling Lela Rose for Spring 2015. The Texas-born designer follows in the footsteps of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Sophie Theallet, who dominated Lane Bryant’s swimwear and intimates categories for Fall 2014, and Isabel Toledo, who has four successful ready-to-wear capsule collections under her belt. So far, Lela, who’s dressed everyone from Michelle Obama to Kate Middleton, is hitting a home run.
Last night, we saw the excitement first-hand when we stopped by the Lela Rose x Lane Bryant meet-and-greet event at the plus-size retailer’s Herald Square location in Manhattan. There, we shopped alongside a gaggle of devout Lane Bryant customers and eager Lela Rose fans who were raving about the new capsule collection that features the designer’s signature feminine silhouettes and pops of color in sizes 14 to 28.
“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity to be able to offer a designer look to women of all shapes and sizes at a great price point,” Lela told us. “I was surprised to see how similar our ready-to-wear and Lane Bryant customers are – they all want to look and feel pretty and love fun colors.”
The same goes for Lela. “I love the lace citrine top and the floral watercolor pleated maxi dress!”
Lane Bryant isn’t the designer’s first foray into mass-market collections. In 2012, she was involved in the Target + Neiman Marcus holiday collection and years earlier, she began a fruitful, multi-year relationship with Payless dating back to 2006.
“I always love the chance to democratize fashion and offer my design sensibility at many price points and sizes,” Lela said. So does that mean a Lane Bryant encore? “I would love to continue in this endeavor!”
