As an in-demand DJ, Brittany Sky has turned the tables for big name artists like Future and CeeLo Green. The native New Yorker is also a fixture on the Big Apple nightclub circuit and managed to put her own spin on sets and mixes for Beats by Dre, Adidas and Oakley, to name just a few. Brittany doesn’t just work her magic from behind the turntables, though. You may recognize her from her leading lady role in Kendrick Lamar’s “Poetic Justice” music video. Add to that her growing portfolio of campaign appearances (we’re talking Chevy, Air Jordan, W Hotels and Target) and you’ve got one of the most well-rounded (and stylish — hey, anyone who lists Rihanna’s closet as her dream wardrobe is tops in our eyes) DJs we’ve ever come across. So when we had the opportunity to pose our quickfire questions to the multifaceted artist, we jumped at the chance. Read on to discover her guilty pleasure, all-time favorite tracks and the one item she’s willing to splurge on.
- My guilty pleasure is… buying makeup and skincare products.
- When I’m stressed, I… rely on music to get me through it and I run.
- My all-time favorite song is… “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye because I witnessed my parents dance to this at three years old and that’s my first and last memory of them in love with one another. I also love Kool & the Gang “Celebration” because it works when I play it for any age group and makes me feel happy.
- The most underrated artist is… Jeremih.
- The artist I most admire is… Pharrell. He set a lot of trends earlier on and he was never afraid to be different. He fathered a lot of styles.
- If I could trade closets with one person it would be… Rihanna.
- The most treasured item in my closet is… it may be weird, but my late granny’s jammies (RIP) — they’re my comfort item.
- I’m dying to splurge on… a Chanel Boy bag.
- When I’m low on energy, I… have a green smoothie or I push myself to work out (believe it or not).
- My beauty essentials include… Bumble and bumble Bb.Curl Defining Creme or DevaCurl SuperCream. I’m also really into Smashbox CC cream and some sort of close-to-my-neutral lip gloss/liner/lipstick.
- If you looked at my desktop you’d find… my desktop is essentially my mood board. I keep all my inspiration images close.
- If my days had one extra hour… I’d honestly probably still procrastinate.
- I’m most excited for fall because… COATS! Coats are an outfit in and of themselves to me. Also layering.
- When it comes to Fashion Week… I like to experiment with my look.
- The most surprising thing about my job is… what’s most surprising to me is that young creatives reach out to me for advice and I find it really flattering.
- My secret talent is… I’m really good at roller skating.
- My biggest regret is… not taking advantage of the Internet and all that it has to offer sooner (an outlet to be inspired, inspire, be creative and make money from).
- My favorite snack is… Cool Ranch Doritos, but my friends who care would probably slap them out of my hand. Also, almonds and nacho sunflower seeds.
- My most memorable work experience is… opening up for Majid Jordan in Brooklyn and DJing Madison Square Garden — and touring with CeeLo Green is up there, too!
- The best advice I’ve ever received is… never do anything you would be ashamed to explain to your kids later and don’t compare your success to someone else’s because your time will come when it’s meant to, plus you don’t know what they did to get to where they’re at (and amen to that!).
- My favorite place in the world is… Chinatown, where my 2-month-old nephew is currently residing and when I’m in Los Angeles, I love to eat with friends at SUGARFISH.
