In late April, Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow and her pal Anna Wintour announced that Goop, the lifestyle site famous for doling out dubious health advice and compiling highly aspirational gift guides, would soon be a collectible quarterly mag. Today, we got our first look at the glossy’s hefty (it’s 96 pages) inaugural issue, due out September 19. To the surprise of no one, Gwyneth Paltrow appears on the cover.
The Terry Tsolis-lensed shot shows the wellness guru doing what she does best — indulging in a slightly off-putting health treatment and trolling Goop haters. Paltrow is pictured covered head-to-toe in (purifying?) mud, topless, wearing nothing but a pair of briefs. The cover line reads “Earth to Gwyneth” in a psychedelic font. It might as well say, “I’m in on the joke, guys.”
Inside you’ll find several pages of advertisements (from Gucci Eyewear, Neiman Marcus Beauty, NBC, BMW, Roberto Coin and Frédérique Constant) along with an eight-page cover story in which Paltrow reflects on her wellness obsession and some of her more controversial “cleansing” experiences (getting stung by live bees on purpose, etc.).
Still, the Iron Man actress manages to remain (kind of) relatable. She admits she’s no stranger to failure. She professes her love of beer, the common man’s drink: “I remember standing in a hippie health-food store in Greenwich Village and I saw a little paperback book describing a ‘master cleanse,’ and I was like, What’s that? I remember the next day [after I finished the cleanse] I was like, Oh, wow, I just did this cleanse, and I feel so much better. I can have a beer and a cigarette now, right?” Celebrities, they’re just like us.
Also included in the $14.99 Condé co-produced issue (Paltrow’s medium may have changed, but her demographic remains the same) are “a makeup bag detox,” “deep-dives into crystals and mud masks, reiki and bee-venom treatments,” instructions for an at-home Tracy Anderson workout, a fall fashion guide and tips for better orgasms. Worth the splurge, we’d say.
