There were a number of great covers this month thanks to top models like Anna Ewers, Frederikke Sofie and Karlie Kloss, but not all were bright and shiny. A Cindy Crawford shot fell flat as did one featuring her daughter, Kaia Gerber, and there were celebrity misses aplenty ranging from the usually stunning Charlize Theron to Riley Keough. The worst, however, was surely Amal Clooney’s Vogue cover that resembled a random paparazzi event snap more than a glamorous cover shoot.
Natural beauty looks ruled most of the covers, which is always nice to see. Unfortunately, diversity wasn’t at a high this month, but there were some standouts, thanks to the U.K. editions of Vogue and ELLE.
Here’s a look at all the best and worst May 2018 magazine covers.
All the May 2018 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated
-
I D
They could have at least bothered to brush Kaia Gerber's hair.
-
InStyle
Even if pink isn't your thing, it's impossible not to smile when looking at this exuberant shot of Zoë Kravitz.
-
Porter
Karlie Kloss' complexion appears to be flawless, so it's nice to see Porter embrace her natural beauty. But for a fashion magazine, it's too zoomed in to show off her clothes.
-
Town & Country
Here is one of the world's most famous supermodels of all time and she's not only horribly styled, but her pose couldn't be more awkward and forced. There's no way this was the best shot Cindy Crawford gave them.
-
Vogue UK
Fashion-wise, the color scheme is more fall than spring, but this shot captures a nicely diverse group of models: Vittoria Ceretti, Halima Aden, Adut Akech, Faretta, Paloma Elsesser, Radhika Nair, Yoon Young Bae, Fran Summers and Selena Forrest.
-
Harper's Bazaar
An undeniably fun cover, even if you may be sick of seeing Gigi Hadid.
-
ELLE
This shot of Charlize Theron looks more like the poster for a horror film than a fashion magazine cover.
-
Marie Claire
Marie Claire gives us five covers this month: Riley Keough, Katherine Langford, Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi and Sophie Turner. One is more bland than the next.
-
Vogue
Anyone else think this looks more like a paparazzi shot from OK! than a meticulously crafted shot of Amal Clooney?
-
Vogue Germany
Luna Bijl gets two covers, each shot by Karl Lagerfeld and, while the jewelry is enviable, the styling is a little too Pretty Woman.
-
Vogue Japan
Bella Hadid looks like she's prepping for a geisha Halloween costume.
-
Vogue Poland
A beautiful and dynamic shot of Natalia Vodianova, though it would have been a lot better if she had less of a shell-shocked expression on her face.
-
ELLE UK
Winnie Harlow continues to inspire as she breaks beauty barriers. Here she is in Gucci Spring 2018.
-
ELLE Canada
Priyanka Chopra looking gorgeous but it would have been nice to see more of her Fendi Spring 2018 outfit.
-
Vogue Russia
Frederikke Sofie's earrings are everything!
-
Vogue Paris
Anna Ewers looking beautifully sun-kissed and effortlessly glam.
