After reviewing the 2020 covers of major magazines, we discovered a substantial increase in diversity. But we’re worried that rise is only temporary. And by the looks of the January 2021 covers that have dropped thus far, we’re right.
So far the vast majority of January 2021 issues feature white cover subjects. There isn’t a lot of diversity when it comes to size and gender, either. On the plus side, ELLE U.K. delivered a beautiful and groundbreaking shot of an embracing Aweng and Alexus Ade-Chuol.
For most of 2020 mags had to get creative with their covers. But the new year is bringing back classic photoshoots. Unfortunately, many shots showcase styling better suited to summer than winter. We’re also gifted great shots of modeling legends Twiggy and Kate Moss. We’ll just have to see what February 2021 brings.
See which covers made an impression, both good and bad, in the slideshow above.
January 2021 Covers
-
Vogue
We love the covers featuring Naomi Osaka, Rosalía and Paloma Elsesser. But this Frances McDormand one is our favorite.
-
InStyle
Jodie Comer photographs like a dream.
-
Harper's Bazaar UK
This cover makes us smile.
-
British Vogue
Always happy to see Kate Moss.
-
ELLE UK
Aweng and Alexus Ade-Chuol sharing a tender moment.
-
Vogue Japan
A little summery for January, but we’re definitely not complaining.
-
Harper's Bazaar Spain
Sublime.
-
Vogue China
The combo of the flowy gown and that epic pony is pure perfection.
-
Vogue Germany
There’s oversized, then there’s just sloppy.
-
Marie Claire Australia
The collar is slightly distracting.
-
Vogue Greece
We just wish Twiggy was looking at the camera.
-
ELLE Spain
The styling ruins it.
-
Vogue Korea
Normally, we’re not fans of props that partially block models’ faces. There’s something striking about the way Soo Joo Park is holding that glass of water, though.
-
Vogue Netherlands
Not feeling the layout.
-
Vogue Spain
Another summery cover for winter…
-
Vogue Russia
The pose is pretty awkward.
