Forum Members Review the Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2024 Collection, the First Post Virginie Viard’s Departure

Today is #ChanelTuesday and the Fall 2024 season of Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week is well and truly underway. Earlier today, the first collection following Virginie Viard‘s sudden departure was unveiled. Guests (including Keira Knightley, Naomi Campbell and Vanessa Paradis) were welcomed inside Paris’ historic Palais Garnier, as Chanel staged its very first fashion show within the majestic surroundings of the opera house (built between 1861 to 1875 at the command of Emperor Napoleon III.). Partly executed by the in-house design team, the studio tapped into classic Chanel codes as the search for Viard’s replacement continues. Amping up the sense of drama (befitting of the setting), voluminous skirts and dramatic capes floated over the mosaic floor of the opera house while Angelina Kendall had the honor of being this season’s couture bride.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Getting rid of Virginie Viard was a great decision. This is already miles better. They finally fixed the proportions.” [avonlea002]

“I mean the collection was mostly designed by Virginie anyway. It has that very passé feel to it. It’s better, particularly the capes and the drama of the Opera.” [Lola701]

“This is actually quite beautiful, minus a a few looks. It feels very French, opulent, and very Haute Couture.” [Frederic01]

“This is such a dignified collection. Chanel can definitely survive without a creative director. Just call Emmanuelle Alt for consulting and that’s it!” [helmutnotdead]

“Seeing how different this collection is from Virad’s usual tricks, I have a hunch that the studio decided to make radical changes to the designs after she left. The proportions, though matronly, are actually on point and the the shoulders and waistline fall perfectly.” [LadyJunon]

“I love all the capes, the high-necks, the puff sleeves and even the pajama bloomers – very Karl’s Victorian rococo Coco. All you need is a horse carriage and a chauffeur to complete the scene. I am getting Marie Antoinette sneaking into a Paris masked ball from this.” [TomBlanksFullFatMiuMiu]
