Red Carpet: 2011 MTV Movie Awards

If the 2011 MTV Movie Awards had to be summarized in three words, they’d be short, sparkly, and Balmain. That’s not to say there wasn’t the expected Herve Leger in the mix, worn most notably by Amanda Bynes (how are stylists still letting their clients go out in these now trite bandage dresses?), but the night was owned — at least in numbers — by Balmain.

Mila Kunis worked Balmain the best in a black top and a gold heavily embellished mini skirt. It was casual, yet chic, young, and fresh. Looking awkward, uncomfortable, and annoyed, as per usual, Kristen Stewart walked the red carpet in a strapless red leather mini dress covered in safety pins and studs, while Leighton Meester opted for a silver long-sleeved Balmain mini dress with mirrors, beads, and other embellishments.

Not in Balmain, but also in heavily embellished minis were Brooklyn Decker in a No. 21 gold long-sleeved dress. It’s unfortunate that no one had scissors on hand to chop off the sleeves. The star who worked the night’s trend the best, however, went hands down to Emma Watson in a white silk Marchesa dress with a delicate hand embroidered neckline and cap sleeves – heavy embellishments done right.

Dolce & Gabbana made a few appearances on the red carpet as well. Notably successful was Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in one of the brand’s signature animal print long sleeve dresses, and notably unsuccessful (though to her defense age appropriate), was Elle Fanning in a floral D&G romper.

While it may have felt redundant to see so many long-sleeved frocks and embellished minis, there were two major surprises. The first was that Emma Stone opted for a Fall 2011 Bottega Veneta dress — a brand rarely seen on the red carpet and even more rarely seen on a budding young star — and the second was that Blake Lively was, gasp, arguably the best dressed of the night in a piercing blue Michael Kors mini with shoulder cut-outs. The runner up award goes to a Giambattista Valli-clad (another brand seen all too rarely on the red carpet) Selena Gomez. Dating Justin Bieber seems to be working wonders on Gomez.

The worst dressed of the night? Jessica Szohr in a heinous paisley print Alice + Olivia jumpsuit.
