Style Showdown: Nicole Kidman’s Mesh Malfunction and More

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ’em how it’s done. Here’s a look at some celebrity fashion hits and misses, from Nicole Kidman’s mesh malfunction and Cate Blanchett’s saggy slacks to Kirsten Dunst’s suit success and Naomi Watts’ minimalist metallic.

Miss: Nicole Kidman’s green velvet and black mesh ensemble on the CMT Music Awards red carpet was perplexing, even if it was Proenza Schouler. Pattern mixing is in, but the blue and green velvet stripes transitioning into an awkwardly-placed brown zigzag followed by a sheer black mesh midi-length skirt with asymmetrical hem was busy and unfinished looking. As if this outfit needed any more elements, Kidman incoherently paired the dress with strappy lilac sandals by Pierre Hardy.

Hit: At the MTV Movie Awards, Twilight actress Nikki Reed’s black high-neck halter number was a stunner. The leather details and mesh maxi skirt amped up the otherwise safe LBD, drawing attention to the star’s legs and reminding us of Blake Lively’s Lanvin look from last year.

Miss: At the Kimchi Chronicles launch party in LA, Heather Graham looked like she stepped out of a club in 1996—and not in a good way. Her gold strapless Donna Karan dress wasn’t supportive enough in the bust and featured an utterly outdated cut that was as awkward as the actress’s pose.

Hit: Naomi Watts’ look at the CFDA Fashion Awards was solid gold. Her shimmering Calvin Klein shift draped elegantly, and she paired it perfectly with nude peeptoe Loubotins and sleek side-swept golden locks for a minimalist metallic ensemble.

Miss: The menswear for women look has been trending with celebrities for a while now, but as Jessica Biel proved last week, this look is tricky because so many things can go wrong. Take the unfortunate beige suit the Cate Blanchett wore for the premiere of Hanna at the Sydney Film Festival, for example. The look could’ve been sophisticated if the whole suit had fit Blanchett as well as it does in the shoulders, but the jacket is much too long and she’s practically swimming in those saggy slacks. Instead, she just looks like a frumpy senator. Bring this back after a visit to the tailor, Blanchett.

Hit: When it comes to red carpet fashion, Kirsten Dunst may very well be the queen of quirk, and she was ruling in this menswear-inspired ensemble at the CFDA Fashion Awards. She suited up in a sexy Patrick Ervell tuxedo which fit her to a T. The metallic lapels and no-nonsense bun added a flashy touch to this daringly original look, proving that there’s something very powerful about a woman in a well-cut suit.
