Movie Muse: Footloose-Inspired Fall Looks

Ladies Night

Dancing may have been outlawed in the small town of the movie Footloose, but everyone knows that western-inspired shoes and “cutting footloose” go hand-in-hand…even the preacher’s daughter. Take a fashion cue from the film and steal the style of dancing darling Ariel (played by Julianne Hough) and rock a pair of red boots to jazz up your little black dress and get you prepped for a fun-filled night on the town with your girls this weekend. Here, we’ll lead the way!

When looking for the perfect pair of cowboy boots to complement your LBD for a night of dancing, you’ll want to keep an eye out for styles that are both trendy AND easy to bust a move in. Anything with a super high heel will leave your feet sore and aching after the first 30 minutes (trust us, we’ve been there), so definitely avoid those. A good compromise is to search for a pair of western style boots with a one- or two-inch heel—nothing crazy, but just enough height to give you that extra boost of confidence you’ll crave on the dance floor. We love the vintage, rustic feel of these short, burnt red cowboy boots from Frye. Available in a multitude of colors, we can picture ourselves cutting a rug on the floor in these babies! Plus, how cute do they look paired with this little black dress from Free People? Very Ariel!

Sunday Brunch

In the movie Footloose, Ariel (played by Julianne Hough) and her dad didn’t always see eye to eye, but there’s definitely no denying the small town beauty’s tight bond with her family. Channel Ariel’s classic, girl-next-door style in layered tanks and a soft knit vest the next time you head off to Sunday brunch with the ‘rents—we’ll show you exactly how to snag her casual chic look!

A Sunday morning meal with friends and family definitely calls for an outfit that’s laid-back and relaxed, just like Ariel’s. The goal of the ensemble should be to look (and feel) put together—nothing too fancy or underdone either. That’s why a cute layered look like Ariel’s works so well for this occasion.

First we suggest you start with your bottom-most garment. Opt for a lace-trimmed cami in a neutral shade (such as brown or beige) or try and find something very similar. Then layer a thin olive tank over it so that only the lace and a small portion of your cami is peeking out from underneath. Finally, throw on your softest knit vest and a pair of light wash jeans, then voila, you’re Sunday brunch ready!

Current/Elliott Roller Jeans, $198.00; American Apparel Rib U-Neck Tank, $22.00; The Limited Lace-Trim Cami, $29.90; Lord & Taylor Wool/Cashmere Cable Trim Vest, $109.99

Date Night

Figuring out how to style your hair for a first date can be challenging (or any date for that matter). Do you leave it down and keep things straight and simple? Pull it back into a bun? Or go for the whole done-up, glamour curls thing? If you ask us, none of the above. Play it cool like Ariel from the film Footloose (played by Julianne Hough) and go for a subtle low maintenance style that still screams chic: soft tousled waves. The perfect date night ‘do, we’ve got the lowdown on how to score the look!

One thing we love about Ariel’s hair is its effortless, just-rolled-out-of-bed appeal—sexy without trying too hard. To steal the style, start by shampooing and conditioning your hair as usual. When you get out of the shower, use a volumizing gel or spray and apply directly to your hair and roots (only a little, you won’t need much). We recommend Garnier Fructis Style Body Boost Root Booster to give your locks a little lift. Once you’ve done that, towel dry hair or let it dry naturally. When it’s almost done, separate your hair into several large sections. Then, using a curling iron, wrap medium sized pieces around the barrel in a corkscrew. We’re huge fans of Revlon’s Curl Stay Curling Iron 1 ¼ inch barrel. Finally, finish off your look with a light holding spray to set your waves in place. We like Nick Chavez’s Angel Wings Super Light Hairspray, $17.00.
