Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how its done. Here are this week’s celeb hits and misses, from Chloe Moretz‘s superhero-inspired leather and cape combo and her bedazzled Chanel outfit to Jessica Biel’s tangerine dream and Sarah Jessica Parker’s wintry whites.
Trend #1: All-One-Color

Miss: Chloe Moretz came into the spotlight for her role in the superhero flick Kick-Ass, and at the VIP opening of the Tommy Hilfiger flagship store in London it looked as if she were reprising her role. Leather pants and capes are both trending with celebs, but worn together in one hue and combined with the athletic piping on the pants and the trailing cut of the cape, the Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2011 look was a flight of fancy that’s over my head. At least her gray velvet Chanel booties are stylish!
Hit: Arriving at the BBC Radio One studios, Jessica Biel showed how wearing one shade from head to toe can look chic rather than costumey. She took the sunny color-blocking trend into fall, pairing a tangerine top and pants in two different textures with a navy peacoat, offset by her cobalt clutch and strappy heels.
Trend #2: Sequin Leggings

Miss: What’s worse than head-to-toe burgundy? Head-to-toe sequins. At a Museum of Modern Art benefit, Moretz’s look might have been Chanel, but with all that bedazzlement, it looked cheap. The babydoll top was too cutesy, and made more so by the bow and rose appliqué. The sequined leggings are spectacular but should’ve been allowed to shine on their own.
Hit: Moretz can take a cue from the way Isabel Marant styled her sequined cropped leggings on the runway with a casual sweater in similar tones. This look might be from the Spring/Summer 2011 runways, but its level of glitz is perfect for the holiday season—especially New Year’s Eve.
Trend #3: White in Winter

Miss: This Tadashi Shoji Spring 2012 white lace number might’ve earned Kate Beckinsale a spot on this week’s Best Dressed Celebs list, but I think her stiff pose at the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations press conference is telling. Even if it is LA, this is way more skin than even Beckinsale can get away with in late November, and the way the flimsy, nightie-inspired material bunches and stretches at the waist makes the look seem very precarious. I’m no stickler for the “no white after Labor Day” rule, and the way the top drapes is lovely, but Beckinsale should’ve kept this one in the closet for next spring.
Hit: Sarah Jessica Parker took the theme of the Unicef Snowflake Ball in NYC to heart when she chose this Louis Vuitton ensemble. The frothy, feathery skirt and shimmery top are the perfect way to wear snowy whites in winter; the unique shape of the top and untucked waist is on-trend, and the length of the skirt is weather-appropriate.
