The Cannes International Film Festival is known for grand gowns and boy, did it deliver this year. Of course, it helped that the 2018 jury president was none other than Cate Blanchett. Her many red carpet outings left no doubt who the queen of this festival was. We saw lots of capes, elaborate trains and the ever-present see-through dresses (one even came with a set of matching boots). But we were surprised that peach proved popular, vintage gowns were favored over current collections in many cases and that everything from shorter hemlines to suits were welcomed(?).
In the midst of all the fashion and fanfare, 82 women
took part in a women’s march to call attention to the need for more women filmmakers and the festival’s complicity in this stark lack of diversity. The number of stars that took part was significant (Blanchett, Léa Seydoux and Salma Hayek were just some of the big names) because it represented the 82 female directors who have been part of the festival over its history, a far cry from the number of male directors whose films have been accepted.
For all the highlights from this year’s festival, check out the jam-packed slideshow above.
