Kim Kardashian Has Been Studying Law for the Past Year

Robert George Kardashian was a well-known attorney who gained notoriety as one of the defense attorneys for O.J. Simpson during his murder trial in 1995. Now it seems his famous daughter, Kim Kardashian West, is set to follow in his footsteps. In a new interview with Vogue for her May cover shoot, Kardashian revealed that she has been studying law for a year already.

Instead of attending law school, Kardashian is on a four-year apprenticeship at a law firm in San Francisco under two mentor lawyers, Jessica Jackson and Erin Haney. According to California laws and the California Bar Association, her method is acceptable as long as she takes and passes the First-Year Law Student’s Exam and is studying at the law firm 18 hours every week for a minimum of 48 weeks, equal to a year of law school. Besides passing the bar, Kardashian would need to get the positive moral character determination and pass the Multi-State Professional Responsibility Examination.

Kardashian is balancing being a businesswoman, a celebrity, a mother, and now a law student. Her inspiration for becoming a lawyer is to help more people like Alice Marie Johnson, who was convicted for nonviolent drug offenses. The 63-year-old woman was given a life sentence that Kardashian believed was unjust, leading her to advocate for prison reform and sentencing.

Kardashian told Vogue about her decision to bring the cause to Washington D.C.: “I made a decision to go to the White House when everyone was telling me, ‘Don’t go, your career will be over; you can’t step foot in there.’ And I was like, ‘It’s my reputation over someone’s life?’ Weigh that out. People talk shit about me all day long. It will just be another story about me versus someone getting their life back.” After meeting with President Trump, he granted clemency to Johnson and the FIRST STEP Act was passed by Congress and signed into law.

With Kardashian’s clout we look forward to seeing Kardashian put her future law degree to good use.
