A few days ago, I was invited to the home of Laura and Harry Slatkin, the dynamic duo that left high-powered careers on Wall Street to start their own home fragrance business, back in 1992.
Sure, their Upper East Side mansion with its butlers and lavish flower arrangements was impressive, but it was the homey feeling emanating from the opulent abode that was the most memorable.
It’s not easy to make guests feel comfortable in a home as intimidatingly luxe as that of the Slatkins, but the greenery, diffusers, and candles scattered around the place sure helped.
There was a freshness and vibrancy to the historic townhouse, in which they hosted the launch event for Laura’s latest collection (Project Art, launching in August 2010) that made all the guests seemingly feel at ease.
