Each season after the New York, London, Milan, and Paris shows, a slew of trends are highlighted, but which of those trends actually take off? A good indicator of what looks make it from the runway to the street is Zara. The retailer has gotten incredibly good at taking inspiration from key shows, ranging from Prada to Jil Sander, and translating each season’s stand-out trends before the designs that inspired them have even hit stores. From color-blocking to leopard, Zara is clearly on the pulse of fashion – much to the chagrin of the luxury labels that continuously give it a raison d’etre. While it’s blatantly obvious that bold hues have taken off, what about a more controversial trend, palazzo pants?
When it comes to this pant, a look can easily veer into unflattering territory. Add to that the fact that most palazzo pants this season have been designed with high waists and in loud colors or with oddball prints, and one has to wonder who and how can these be pulled off? I suspect some Zara customers are wondering the same thing as I saw many women discarding them after trying them on.
To best pull of this trend, take a cue from Olivia Palermo, and whether you opt for a neutral shade or a loud print, don’t let your body get lost in all that fabric. Always wear a belt to define your waist. Confidence is another key element (isn’t it always with a daring look?), so if you’re going to go for fur, print pants, and leopard booties in the vein of Palermo’s look, don’t forget to bring some attitude with it.
