It's that time of year…the air is getting crisp, the morning and evenings start to cool down, but the days can still be hot! What are you supposed to do? Dress in layers, and make sure you've got the essential pieces to transition from summer days to fall nights with ease. Granted, at times it's going to require an outfit redux (day-to-night gets tricky with one look), but if you're as savvy as we know you are, it's not going to be a problem. Sit back, relax, and check out this show that details the most important wardrobe pieces for the most seamless fall transition you've ever had.
Must-Have Fall Transition Pieces
Tights
First and foremost, you've got to assess your tights situation. If yours from last season are worn out, get new ones. Tights can cover your legs stylishly under almost ANYTHING you're still wearing from the height of summer. We're talking about your rompers, shorts, flare and mini skirts, even your sundresses (add a pair of oxfords and you've got a quirky schoolgirl look). Never be without a standard pair of black opaque tights when the nights start to cool down. And while you're picking up a couple of go-to pairs, you should probably consider a pair of patterned tights, too.

Patterned Tights
Oh, hey sexy legs. What's up? That little black dress you do not want to part with once summer comes to an end can now be a fall and winter staple too. Just keep your clothing simple when you don a pair of patterned tights.

Leggings
Leggings are here to stay, regardless of what naysayers think. For the same reason UGGS are still prevalent, leggings aren't "going out" anytime soon. They're uber functional. They let you go straight from yoga class to brunch. And they give you lightweight coverage and warmth on the first slightly cool days of fall. Yes, they can be worn as "pants." You deserve to show off your well-earned gym physique. Just don't ever wear them as "tights" under shorts, skirts, etc. And keep them black and opaque. No patterns here.
$450 at Shopbop .
Moto Boots
It's time for boots. Flats can only take you so far, and sandals just look out of place post-August. When it comes time to don socks, you should also have a pair of moto boots on hand. Equestrian boots work too, but quite frankly, moto boots add flare where riding boots are a little on the predictable side of things.

Ankle Boots
Sometimes you need to wear heels, in which case ankle boots fit the bill. Try to stick to a pair with a manageable heel height and thickness so you're able to wear them day or night.

The Layer(s)
Remember how I mentioned layers in the intro? Here is one that you cannot live without: a basic, lightweight sweater. Whether it's in a solid color or striped, you need it to pull over t-shirts and tanks and under your go-to jacket.
$19.80 at Forever 21 .
Vest
If you don't have a vest in your wardrobe, now is the time to get one; it's perfect to layer over and under different pieces. Be saucy and wear it on its own with your favorite skinnies for a night out. Muy caliente. I'm specifically talking about suiting-inspired vests, which are sexier and more versatile than say, a puffy vest or one in denim. Though, if you're into those vests, by all means wear them.

Go-To Jacket
There are a lot of acceptable options here, depending on your personal sense of style. You can opt for a little leather number, a boyfriend blazer, something military-inspired, or a simple jean jacket. While it would be nice to have all of them in your closet for essentials, just pick one and make it your go-to. Even if it's not a perfect match for the outfit underneath, it can add a point of interest, style contrast, and warmth.
$178 at J.Crew .
Square Scarf
Why a Square? Well, more surface area will give you more coverage, more folding options, and ultimately add a bit of warmth, unlike a skinny scarf. Silk, cotton, wool, or otherwise, pick a pattern you love and rock it.
$320 at Forzieri .
