Don’t worry if grey isn’t the first color that comes to mind when you think of neutrals, you’re not alone. The fashion industry has long touted the versatility of cream, white, navy and black, but grey has been mysteriously absent when it comes to neutral ground. Perhaps it’s seen as a bit drab, something left for cold weather or rainy days. Thankfully, designers this season are throwing off the clouds surrounding grey and very strongly suggesting that it’s more than appropriate for sunshine. I agree. Pair light grey with beautiful pastels and you’ve grown up your look. Put grey with navy and you’ve lightened it. Put it with neon and you’ve got something infinitely more interesting than the standard black backdrop. Pair it with your statement shoes and jewelry for a neutral that can hold its own in a supporting role. Want to see more possibilities? Take a peek at all the shades of grey from the spring runways.
Shades of Grey: Spring's Newest Neutral

Tunic
This sumptuous leather tunic looks studded from a distance. Up close delicate laser cuts add a spring feel to this tunic. Though we love it with shorts peeking under, it would be equally chic with pants.

Boho
I can't get enough boho when warm weather hits. At this point, I have to be honest that it's just part of my personal style. Embroidery, tassles, a flowing fabric and I'm hooked. Isabel Marant made the perfect boho dress this spring. Full of flounce, hugging and revealing in all the right places without being too much (the grey-cream palette helps), it is so good.

Drape
Donna Karan is an iconic American designer. Though her collections don't make headlines much these days, they are steadfastly chic, wearable and cool, which is why I pay special attention to her each season. How gorgeous would this dress be with a pair of sexy, colorful heels?

Forge
This look immediately brought to mind liquid metal. It's tough and beautiful at the same time, and would be amazing with leather (real or faux) leggings.

This preppy look from Rochas has a Gatsby feel that's sure to turn heads, particularly this summer. Look for anything 20s-inspired to be hailed as a new classic — with good reason.

Love the graphic elements to this skirt and sweater set. Love the choice of knit fabric that breathes and moves with you. Love the shape. Love everything about it.

Bustier
Posen knows how to cut and fit a gown like nobody's business. Has grey ever looked to beautiful or so feminine?

Either of these pieces would be a wardrobe coup that can take place over and over, throughout spring and summer, and into fall.

Skin
An argument can be made that grey is appropriate for warm weather simply by the nature of its shade that brings to mind the relief of a cool shadow. This model doesn't only look cool in a James Dean kind of way, she looks cool in an "I arrive in chauffeured, air conditioned cars" kind of way.

Gown
Raf Simons had a lot on his plate when he took the helm at Dior. He unabashedly went in his own direction and we loved him for it. This simple A-line gown is given life with colorful embroidery.
