5 Trends to Splurge On And 5 to Steal
-
Splurge: Trench Coat
A hit every spring and fall, NBC Today Show contributor & best-selling author Jene Luciani calls the trench coat a “timeless essential that makes a chic statement, rain or shine.”
Keep it classic with a beige trench or mix up the style staple by opting for a colored trench like Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellasario.

Splurge: Mini Bag
Big, bulky bags were so last year. Save your back and go hands-free with a crossbody mini bag. A mini bag will fit all the essentials and is a vital piece to have in your closet. “So transitional for day to night,” says author & style expert Dawn Del Russo, who recommends adding this trend to your splurge list.

Splurge: Moto Jacket
Del Russo feels that moto jackets are practically a classic and we can’t argue with her. Layer over a floral frock or pair with skinny jeans. A moto jacket adds a touch of cool to every outfit, works well for finicky weather, and will be that one item that can pull a whole look together. So why haven’t you bitten the bullet and bought a quality moto jacket yet?

Splurge: Navy Wedges
The Duchess of Cambridge has been spotted wearing navy wedges for years. Clearly, these shoes are more versatile than you’d think. Pair with a wrap dress for work or a T-shirt dress for a casual style. Or make the shoes stand out by styling with boyfriend jeans and cuffing the bottom to really bring attention to the wedges.
Celebrity stylist and brand consultant Jen Abrams recommends spending more money on shoes as they take more wear and tear and need to be of quality that will hold up and last. Plus, comfy feet aren’t bad either.

Splurge: High-Waist Jeans/Shorts
The high waist makes crop tops less intimidating, your legs look longer, and it helps hold in your belly when you sit down. They’re also very 90s, look great with a tight tee tucked in, and are worth spending more on to get a pair that fits you to perfection.

Steal: Crop Tops
Crop tops may be blowing up and even making their way onto the red carpet (Taylor Swift at the ACM’s, stunning!), yet this midriff-baring trend makes it into the “steal” category. It’s not the most versatile and you’ll likely outgrow the trend.
“Steal the crop top. It will be in this season, but I’m sure out the next,” says Del Russo.

Steal: Statement Sneakers
Every girl needs some stylish kicks for when she feels like keeping it casual.
“You can get these at all price points and they are a this-season staple,” says Luciani, who recommends looking for prints and embellishments.
Lucky for us, Taylor Swift’s collection with Keds showcases this trend in lots of varieties and most styles are in the $50 range.
-
Steal: Phrase Tees
Words like Selfie & Flawless may seem fun now, but how often will you really want to wear that? “The phrases will get old,” says Del Russo, who recommends saving your cash when it comes to the slogan T-shirt trend.
Try the Trend: #Selfie Cotton T-Shirt, $39.50 at French Connection.
-
Steal: Matching Sets
Fashion seems to be getting more and more matchy, but that doesn’t mean you should invest in coordinating pieces. Sure, a floral top with matching skirt sounds super cute, but “will turn into a love-hate relationship,” says Del Russo. Enjoy matching sets on a skinny budget to keep from feeling guilty for only wearing a few times, and trust me, you will only wear it a few times.
Try the Trend: Flower Power Crop Top ($19) & Skirt ($22) at Love Culture.

Steal: Statement Necklaces
“Statement necklaces are huge again this season. Whether we’re talking embellishments or metals, they were all over the runway,” says Abrams.
Go cheap on this trend (think LuLu*s, Forever 21, H&M and Kohl’s) so you can have a few statement necklaces to rotate in your wardrobe. They make a statement so will be recognized if you wear the same necklace on repeat.
“With affordable necklace options out there, you’re able to embrace the trend and even buy multiple styles to switch up all the time,” adds Abrams.
