It’s funny how quickly things change when it comes to fashion. One minute square-toe shoes were as obsolete as boleros. Now square toes are the hottest sandal shape for summer. The pivot is largely attributed to Bottega Veneta‘s square-toe quilted pumps from the Fall 2019 runway. Then By Far and Staud helped fuel the obsession with their sleek sandals. In fact, you couldn’t look at street style photos without spotting at least eight pairs.
As we move into fall, there are other square-toe shoes that deserve your attention. Nina Ricci, Roberto Cavalli, Balenciaga and Proenza Schouler experimented with square toes in many forms, from high heels to cowboy boots. The preferred shape is a proper square toe with none of this rounded corners business. But if you want to ease into the trend, there are some less severe options.
