Top Spring Fashion Trends From the 2020 Runways

So long, fashion month! Last Tuesday, the proverbial curtains closed on Louis Vuitton’s Belle Époque-themed grand finale and all the editors, bloggers and models headed home. (Not counting the ones that left days earlier to make it to Justin and Hailey Bieber’s wedding, that is.)

While we’re sad to bid adieu to so many memorable style (and cultural) moments — Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Barclays Center bash, the second coming of J.Lo’s internet-breaking Versace dress, Christian Lacroix’s return to Paris Fashion Week by way of Dries Van Noten, Chanel’s runway crasher — we’re beyond eager to take on all the fun Spring 2020 trends that made themselves known.

This batch of collections was not about subtlety. Many designers looked to the past this season, borrowing some of the 15th and 18th centuries’ most sartorially dramatic trends. Statement hats were everywhere (thank you, Jacquemus) as were the brightest shades of orange and the shiniest of golds. Also, polka dots got a cool-kid update as did grandmotherly crochet and pseudo-conservative Bermuda shorts.

Another thing to note: once the weather warms again, wearing your underwear in public will not only be socially acceptable, it’ll be highly encouraged.

Fashion Month Spring 2020 Trends

Orange

Orange was everywhere on the Spring 2020 runways, from the ruffle-accented tangerine dresses at Christopher Kane to the bright knit separates at Dawei to the winged anoraks at Issey Miyake. It’s going to be a good season for attention seekers.

Throw It Way Back

As we prepare to enter the 2020s, designers are throwing it way, way back. Loewe showed lace dresses with stiff 18th-century panniers, Valentino gave us blouses with puffy Elizabethan collars. Simone Rocha incorporated Age of Enlightenment-inspired trompe l’oeil accents, Comme des Garçons did jacquard bloomers. At Dries Van Noten, we saw brocade frock coats paired with shiny miniskirts featuring their own ruffled (misplaced) bustles. Essentially, designers across all four cities hearkened back to times when women’s fashion, while oppressive, could also be fabulously dramatic and — with a few modern tweaks — fun.

Cut Outs

We saw lots of cut-outs, especially those of the circular variety, on the runways this season. Guy Laroche’s Spring 2020 collection included a Swiss cheese-d denim number. Gucci played with negative space in the shape of pared-down petals. At Paco Rabanne, we caught a hint of breastbone, at Off-White a peek of abs. Basically, it’s up to you to decide just how much skin you’re prepared to reveal, then go for it.

There’s been a general shift away from sneakers and streetwear among the fashion set and as a result we’ve seen lots of suits, both on and off the runways. To ensure we don’t tire of this trend, for Spring 2020 designers offered up plenty of new and inventive takes on tailoring. Patterned three-piece suits were a recurring theme at Etro and more. Sacai belted voluminous pinstripe co-ords with what looked like bungee cords. At JW Anderson, jackets bottomed out in bells. Balmain gave us one-legged Beetlejuice pants and sharp-shouldered blazers. And, of course, there was embroidery galore, most notably at Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior.

Yes, polka dots are cool again. Some might see it as twee, but to the fashion crowd, the spotty motif suddenly feels fresh and exciting. Thank the myriad designers (Paco Rabanne, Erdem, Dries Van Noten, etc.) who gave it a Spring 2020 makeover by playing with color, scale and spacing.

Crochet got an update, too. No longer just for grannies, on the Spring 2020 runways it took the form of delicate, lace-like ponchos (at Marine Serre), midriff-baring crop tops (at Salvatore Ferragamo and Altuzarra) and draped floral dresses (at Marni). Designers' advice? Play with texture. Pair crochet dresses with silky slips or gauzy, puff-sleeve button-downs and crochet tops with high-shine, high-rise pants or breezy patterned skirts.

Turns out New York’s lingerie-as-daywear trend did, in fact, have legs. Corsets, bras, undies and teddies popped up on runways all over Europe. Some, like Ermanno Scervino and Chloe, offset the risqué garments with businesslike suiting. Others, like Christian Dior, Loewe, Ralph & Russo and Marine Serre, forwent subtlety, pairing cage bras and high-rise briefs with (totally transparent) silk, tulle and organza pieces. Hey, if you’re going to drop serious coin on your underwear, why not show it off?

Shiny, happy people will be pleased to know gold is trending — hard. Acne Studios showed linen pants and coats foiled in gold, Prada a semi-practical 50s-meets-70s skirt suit. Balenciaga gave us metallic crinoline gowns fit for Cinderella, Marc Jacobs and Rick Owens floor-skimming sequin dresses that basically screamed let’s party! Long story short, it’s time to give yourself the full Midas touch.

If the Spring 2020 collections are any indication, in seven months we’ll all be wearing knee-grazing Bermuda shorts Pretty Woman-style — belted with a tucked (or half-tucked for extra fashion points) button-down and matching blazer. Alternatively, micro shorts that could easily be mistaken for underwear were also big on the catwalks as were bike shorts (again).

Repeat after us: red leather, yellow leather… For Spring 2020, many designers gravitated toward bright colors, particularly when it came to crafting shorts, pants, skirts and coats from the oh-so-buttery, oh-so-problematic material that is leather. Miu Miu showed luxurious leather gilets in emerald green, influencer favorite Bottega Veneta a safety orange leather trench. Why so many brands continue to use the stuff even as they move away from fur is beyond us, but we will keep this eye-grabby trend in mind as we make our faux purchases.
