Fashion Month Fall 2022 was a study in contradictions. It appears as if every designer offered some sort of riff on Spring 2022’s now infamous micro skirts brought to us by Miuccia Prada. Not to mention micro shorts and dresses. On the flip side, epically high-waisted pants and skirts also proved popular. It doesn’t exactly balance out.
That’s not all. Necklines reached new lows. Which may work on the
red carpet , but not in real life. (See Mônot.) Then there were the cold shoulders. So instead of exposing midriffs, shoulders and arms provided a hint of flesh.
A couple trends showed some real staying power. Even though they both experienced a bit of an evolution. The ever-present opera gloves now come attached to tops and dresses. Or in the same shades as tops and dresses to create a seamless effect.
Tie-dye also reemerged. Only this time the patterns were more elaborate. In other words, less Grateful Dead and more hippie chic. Issey Miyake even supplied an elegant take you could almost wear to work be it in the office or over
Zoom . Just make sure you check with HR first.

Micro Mania
Last season Miuccia Prada introduced micro skirts to the world via Miu Miu. The shortened silhouette actually makes sense for spring and summer. This season everyone (including Miu Miu) included them in their collections. Diesel used belts instead of skirts. Courrèges embraced micro dresses, while Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini and Miu Miu supplied short shorts. Having cold legs is apparently a price you’ll have to pay come September in the name of fashion.

Sky-High Waists
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, high waists are also in. In extreme fashion, designers kept raising the bar. Acne Studios presented pants and skirts with waists just under models’ busts. Burberry created a belted jumpsuit. Sometimes it was only an illusion. Balmain piled up complementary belts. And Christian Dior used corsets to increase the rise on its pants.

Opera Gloves 2.0
Looks like opera gloves are here to stay. This time around many were attached to tops and dresses. Creating a similar silhouette, the popular gloves were also slipped on over matching clothing. Making it hard to discern where the gloves left off and the shirt or dress begins.

That's a Wrap
The street style set may still be fans of oversized scarves, but that tune may change come fall. Skinny scarves were wrapped around many models’ necks. Plus, pussy-bow blouses got in on the action by letting their ties hang.

Cool Cold Shoulders
Get ready to show some shoulder. Cold shoulders are about to be everywhere. Exposure ranged from peeks of skin to flaunting the top part of arms. Balmain drew extra attention to them by layering a corset top on top. Meanwhile, Akris and Loewe sent red carpet-worthy dresses down their respective runways.

Windbreaker Wonders
While we often associate windbreakers with spring, designers are pushing them for fall. Diesel created a matching set complete with drawstrings. Elie Saab gave us an elegant hoodie option and Max Mara created a vest version styled with opera gloves, natch. Roksanda actually teamed up with Fila for high-fashion takes on the sporty jackets.

Take the Plunge
Get ready for a dip. Necklines definitely dropped this season. From dresses to jumpsuits to tops and even a vest courtesy of Alexandre Vauthier. Some were so low, they almost showed off belly buttons. Mônot’s suspender dress left little to the imagination.

Tie-Dye With a Twist
Sick of tie-dye? Too bad. Designers are still on a psychedelic trip. But these aren’t the typical patterns you can create on T-shirts at home. Alaïa and Loewe got graphic with their dresses. While Issey Miyake was a tad more restrained.
